New American Nation (1789-1799)

 
1789-1797: George washington is president,
1793 Citizen Genet Incident: Ambassador without portfolio came to US looking for support in war against Britain, starts writing and riling up the public, Washington has him deported for rabble rousing. (not officially, but you get the idea)
1794 Whiskey Rebellion: pennsylvanian farmers revolt against whiskey tax, put down by George Washington's federally raised army. HAs more troops under his command then then he did during the whole Revolutionary war
1794 Neutrality Act: america would be neutral, this was passed in response to the French Revolution, b/c Washington didn't want US getting involved, Thomas Jefferson resigns as a result of this
1794 Jay Treaty: Gb would remove western forts but would not stop the impressment of US sailors
1795 The Pinckney Treaty:  us gains access to new orleans and lower mississippi river, florida border is set at 31st parallel
1796 Washington's Farewell address: national unity, anti-political parties, obey + support constitution, isolationism
1797 XYZ Affair: a commission sent to france by the US was asked for a bribe before negotiations even began, US public gets word of this and is outraged
1797-1801 John Adams: president, under him... the federal government's power was strengthened and a fiscal system was developed
1798 Alien and Sedition Acts
Naturalization act- raised residency requirements for citizenship. (hurt the demo-reps)
Alien (friends) Act- prez can deport people he thinks are threats
Alien (enemies) Act- allowed deportation/arrest of anybody during war time
Sedition Act- public criticism of gov was a misdemeanor, possibly treasonous
1798 Kentucky Resolution: affirmed the compact (states rights) theory of govn't, written by Thomas Jefferson 
1799 Virginia Resolution: affirmed the compact (states rights) theory of govn't, written by James Madison
