Key terms (Early 1800's)


Clay's American system: economic system that was a major issue of the 1824 election, showed the national republicans generally benefited the elites, it was also very similar to Hamilton's Economic Plan

National Republicans: said to have emerged out of the dying federalist party after their demise post-war of 1812, b/c they both supported a national bank and a high tariff

Election of 1824
John Quincy Adams: (Democratic-Republican) Wins, defeats runner up Jackson
Andrew Jackson: (Democratic-Republican) loses as a result of "Corrupt Bargain"
Henry Clay: (Democratic-Republican)
William Crawford: (Democratic-Republican)
1824 Corrupt Bargain: Adams had more electoral votes,though not enough to give him the presidency, so the debate goes to House of Representatives, when the votes are tallied Adams wins, but Jackson supporters claim Clay (then Speaker of the House) had manipulated the voting to benefit adams. Made even more suspicious when Clay is appointed Secretary of State, then viewed as the person most likely to succeed the president
Election of 1828
John Quincy Adams: (National Republican)
Andrew Jackson:  (Democrat) wins
Caucus System: a system wherein the political party leaders selected candidates, so the rank and file party members had no say in the candidates
1822 and 1831 Denmark Vesey's and Nat Turner's : slave rebellion
1830 Indian Removal Act: reluctant, often forced relocation of indians to the west, strongly supported by the southerners
